OpenZen VOX privacy notice
Version 0.5.5 beta. Updated 31 October 2026. This notice describes the Chrome extension, not unrelated OpenZen applications.
Publisher and contact
OpenZen VOX is provided by OpenZen. Current publisher/contact details are available in the OpenZen website imprint: https://openzen.info/impressum/. Privacy questions: info@openzen.info.
What the extension handles
On supported YouTube watch pages, the extension reads available caption or transcript text and language/audio-track metadata. It reads the current page address to identify the video and uses its identifier, playback time, pause/seek/rate/volume/mute state and caption visibility to keep translation attached to the right video. The targeted CC button or C-key interaction controls caption visibility. It does not read a general browsing-history database or log general keyboard or mouse activity.
Purpose and processing
This information is used to translate the video text into the Chrome menu language, show optional source/translation previews and synthesize synchronized narration. Translation uses Chrome’s built-in on-device Translator API. The default neural synthesis model is included in the extension. The optional system-voice mode filters out remote voices. The extension does not record a microphone or capture raw video/audio.
Storage and retention
User-selected settings are stored in chrome.storage.local. OpenZen VOX does not write a permanent viewing or transcript history. Page-controller caption/transcript, translation and current-session caches are held in memory and released with their controller/context reset or close. Separately, the extension keeps a bounded in-memory synthesis cache of prepared speech and associated synthesis keys/text. This cache can outlive a video, viewing session or YouTube page until entries are evicted, the offscreen extension context is released or the browser exits. Browser language packs and bundled model files contain model data, not a saved transcript.
Network and sharing
OpenZen VOX does not send captions, translations, video identifiers or prepared speech to an OpenZen server or a third-party cloud speech service. It has no extension analytics, advertising SDK, account registration or payment system, and does not sell this information. YouTube continues its ordinary website operations. Chrome may download and manage translation language packs and extension updates under Chrome/Google’s own policies. Visiting openzen.info or downloading a ZIP is a separate website request covered by that website’s privacy notice; this extension does not turn those visits into caption uploads.
Your controls
You can disable automatic translation, change voice/subtitle preferences, mute the video or stop playback. Closing the YouTube page releases its page-controller data; it does not immediately erase prepared speech retained in the separate bounded extension cache. That cache is released by eviction, offscreen-context release or browser exit. Removing the extension removes its extension settings through Chrome; browser-managed model packs and normal YouTube/browser data remain subject to the browser’s controls. No OpenZen account is needed.
Use and changes
This notice applies to the described 0.5.5 beta build. If data handling changes, the notice and store disclosures must be reviewed before the changed build is published. Contact info@openzen.info for questions about this extension.
